Safety & Home Exchange Guide
Last updated: 2026-08-16
This guide helps you prepare for a safe and enjoyable home exchange experience. Whether this is your first exchange or your tenth, reviewing these recommendations protects you, your family, and your home.
Before the Exchange
Communicate clearly with your exchange partner about expectations, house rules, parking, key handover, and emergency contacts. Share a detailed guide about your home including appliance instructions, Wi-Fi passwords, waste collection schedules, and nearby services (pharmacy, hospital, grocery). Verify your home insurance covers third-party occupation and inform your insurer if required. Secure valuables and personal documents in a locked area. Confirm local regulations permit temporary home exchanges — check lease terms, HOA rules, or building management policies.
Verifying Your Exchange Partner
Exchange only with verified Nesthopping members. Review their profile, family details, and home listing carefully. Use the in-app messaging system for all communications — avoid moving conversations to unverified channels. Trust your instincts: if something feels off, it is okay to decline or ask more questions. Nesthopping's verification process confirms identity, but it does not guarantee behavior.
During the Exchange
Treat your exchange partner's home as you would your own. Follow all house rules, respect quiet hours, and be considerate of neighbors. Report any damage or issues to the homeowner and to Nesthopping immediately — do not wait until the end of the stay. Keep the home clean and tidy throughout your stay. Do not invite unauthorized guests without explicit permission from the homeowner.
After the Exchange
Leave the home in the condition you found it. Complete a departure checklist: clean surfaces, run a dishwasher cycle, take out trash, and return keys as agreed. Report your experience honestly — your feedback helps the community maintain high standards. If you encountered issues, contact Nesthopping support before leaving a negative review so we can help resolve it.
Emergency Situations
In case of a medical emergency, fire, or security threat, call local emergency services immediately (112 in the EU). Then notify your exchange partner and Nesthopping support. Keep emergency numbers for the local area visible and accessible. Familiarize yourself with the home's exits, fire extinguisher locations, and gas/water shut-off valves upon arrival.
Children and Pets
If traveling with children, verify that the exchange home is child-safe and discuss any specific needs in advance. If pets are part of the exchange, agree on clear terms: which areas pets can access, feeding routines, and veterinary contacts. Both families should disclose allergies or concerns related to pets before confirming the exchange.
Insurance and Liability
Nesthopping is a platform connecting families — we do not provide home insurance, liability coverage, or guarantees. Each member is responsible for maintaining adequate home insurance and verifying that their policy covers temporary exchanges. We strongly recommend documenting the condition of your home (photos and video) before and after each exchange.
Reporting Concerns
If you experience unsafe conditions, property damage, harassment, or any violation of community standards, report it immediately using the in-app Report button or by contacting support@nesthopping.homes. All reports are reviewed by our team and handled in accordance with EU Digital Services Act requirements. Retaliation against members who file reports is strictly prohibited.
